I have stayed at Starlight twice now - Feb 2010 for 2 nights and April 2011 for 3 nights. Both times were 10 out of 10. I think 3 nights is a minimum - for me anyway. All the good comments on TripAdvisor about Starlight Bali are true. The staff are indeed friendly and the food is clean, meaning light and not oily, etc and it has a certain vegetable content, which I quite like. I was actually quite impressed with how the food was presented. The peanut sauce they make is really good too - one of the best I have ever had. The nasi goreng for breakfast is very good and the freshly made juices are a great taste in the morning. I have seen it written about the cooks at Starlight "our famous cooks" and I wondered what that really meant. I observed them and tried to resolve the question in my mind. After I had eaten 3 breakfasts and one dinner there I decided the kitchen staff are dedicated to what they are doing and I believe they are striving for excellence. At least that's what it seems like. I'd say they try to make a perfect meal each time. I am not kidding. I looked at my breakfast on the third morning and it looked like something out of a magazine. Superb. The cooks (I do not know if they are chefs but they ought to be!) are dressed in uniform. I noticed about 3 or 4 males and one female. She looked very impressive with a full uniform - white jacket with small black buttons that made me think of black pearls, she looked extremely healthy and vibrant. It was quite a pleasing sight to see. I also think the owners have a lot to do with the details of Starlight because there are fruit trees planted in the gardens - mangoes, paw paw, bananas, lemons, coconuts - and I suspect the owners are into a healthy life style. Starlight seems to be oriented towards healthy living, again, because the food is geared towards that and everything is clean - the pool is very clean too. I hope I have expressed this without confusing anyone. It's a great spot. The WiFi at Starlight is now free and works well except your Outlook mail client might not work (if it is old Outlook) for sending emails - you will need to adjust your sending mail server name. Or use Gmail or Hotmail for sending, which do work OK. I got a voucher with userid/password for connecting to their hotspot and that was all easy to do. The first trip I was on a motor bike. I got help doing a wiring modification for my motorsports helmet camera with one of the young guys who work there. (I say young because I am in the 50s myself!) They will help you arrange most things and give directions and discuss about the local area, etc. They are very pleasant. The quality of the accommodation is very high. Stand-alone bungalows with a small verandah where you can take your breakfast if you want. The swimming pool is really nice and away from everything. The times I used it I was the only one in.
On the second trip I was greeted by my name before I said who I was. The Front Desk lady is very friendly and helpful and I felt very much at ease there.
I had a fruit bowl in my room on the second trip which was a very nice touch.
Other good restaurants are Jasmine Kitchen (Thai restaurant upstairs and coffee shop downstairs), SeaBreeze (outdoorsey local style), Adirama Seaside (breezey lunch various dishes) and Rambutan (fabulous grounds and gardens with good choices). Use TripAdvisor to find out more about them.
I can recommend this as a Bali trip:
Arrive Denpasar in the morning
Get motor bike or car or car with driver
Go to Lovina via the Pupuan road (stunning scenery)
Stay at Starlight
Visit the restaurants above
Ask at Starlight for any excursions/trips they recommend - there are 5 waterfalls somewhere there
Do the dolphin trip if you haven't done it before
Visit the Singaraja Markets one morning and make sure to take your camera with you
Take a day trip to the north west of Bali to see the National Park
Stop in at the Amertha Bali Villas near Pemuteran for lunch - they're really beautiful
After your stay, drive off to the east through SIngaraja and down the east coast to Candidasa
Have lunch at the Lotus Seaview there
Drive to Denpasar/Seminyak/Legian/Kuta/Airport - wherever you are headed
Fly home
